Window replacement can be a big project. Making the best long-term investment in replacement windows in Florida varies from place to place. Miami, for example, has more cooling needs, while Tallahassee needs more heat. To make the best choice among today's high-performance windows, ask for written data and compare the following ratings, which are posted on ENERGY STAR windows.
U-Factor
This is the rate of non-solar heat loss or gain for the entire window assembly. It is measured in Btus per hour per square foot per degrees Fahrenheit. A lower U-factor means that your Florida windows resist heat flow and are better at insulating. But you can't consider U-factor alone when choosing replacement windows.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
This is the amount of solar radiation transmitted through just the glass, and ratings are between 0 and 1. A lower rating means less solar heat infiltration. In Florida, windows with a higher SHGC may be more desirable in cooler Jacksonville than in warmer Tampa.
Visible Transmission (VT)
The whole window assembly affects how much light is transmitted. Oceanfront homes may prefer a lower VT.
Air Leakage (AL)
This is the amount of air leakage in cubic feet that passes through cracks in the entire window assembly. It isn't always on the window label.
Condensation Resistance (CR)
The CR can be rated 1 to 100. Windows vary in resisting condensation formation inside the house. Again, this isn't always on the label, as the other rating factors are considered the most important.
