When it comes to high energy costs, Florida is not a state that immediately comes to mind. But although heating is not often required there, the cost of cooling your Florida home can be considerable. To keep the heat out and the cool in, energy efficient replacement windows can be a big help.
In order to minimize heat gain through your windows, there are a number of factors to consider. Replacement window frames should block heat transfer. Vinyl window frames are best for a price/performance ratio. Wood frames tend to be significantly more expensive and aluminum frames do not perform as well. Replacement window glass is even more important, with several parameters to look at. The U-value is a measure of thermal performance, similar to the R-value of insulation. The shading coefficient is also a good measure of how heat is transferred. With both of these measurements, lower is better. You can also block solar heat from entering your Florida home with low-E coatings, either in the glass or as a film between the panes of a double-pane window.

Florida vinyl window replacement for midrange homeowners averages more than $9,000. But, many homeowners find that much of this investment is recouped on resale. For an upscale home in Florida, the vinyl window replacement cost averages just over $12,000 and a large percentage of this cost is sometimes returned when the home is sold. For 2010, there are also Federal tax incentives of up to 30 percent of the window replacement cost up to $1,500, not including labor. In order to qualify, windows must achieve a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) 30 or less.
Replacing your Florida home's windows with new energy efficient windows is a great way to beat the heat and save money.
